Elysium Strand: Paul Courtnage (Courtney) & Carol Courtnage

In addition to their filming and production work, Courtney & Carol Courtnage have their own band, Elysium Strand, which they formed in 2007. They write and record the soundtrack music for their video productions in their studio - Magrathea Studios - originally set up in Buckingham and relocated to the South of France in 2014. Elysium Strand also produce music CDs of their soundtrack music and other peices written as album tracks.

Elysium Strand's music is difficult to categorise, being an eclectic mix of genres ranging from electronica to accoustic. They write the vast majority of their own music, but also produce their own arrangements of some classical pieces.

The audio player below has a few of their tracks to listen to while you read this page - use the slider to move forward to other tracks and give it a few seconds to catch up. The first five tracks are from the album Pandora (Pandora, About Time, Thistlegorm, Upland and Pandore Finale), the remainder (including Elysium Strand's signature peice, Time Runs Away) are from the album Expectations - a collection from their back catalogue. Elysium Strand are currently working on a new album, Lone Wolf.

ABOUT ELYSIUM STRAND'S MUSIC ON THIS PAGE - The first five (conjoined) tracks are from the album, Pandora.

1: Pandora (Pandora Element 1) - The first part of Courtney's concept album, Pandora; five connected 'elements', each about a specific place or places. Courtney started work on this, the title track, back in 2008 to use as a soundtrack to their Expedition Ocean Vision 5 Video Diary. Recorded by Courtney in Elysium Strand's original Magrathea Studio in Buckingham in 2009.

"The places in each element are deliberately not defined to the listener (apart from one name) to allow the music to invoke the listener's own connections to places, making the listening experience unique to you. The places don't have to be real."

2: About Time (Pandora Element 2) - Inspired by a place that invoked the idea that our perception of time is shaped by our location and how we relate to it. Although the shortest piece on the album, it took by far the longest to write and record, finally finished in 2016. Recorded by Courtney, Elysium Strand, at Magrathea Studios, France.

3: Thistlegorm (Pandora Element 3) - Written and recorded by Courtney after Expedition Ocean Vision 3 to the Red Sea in 2009 and revisiting the wreck of the SS Thistlegorm. The second half of this piece is about diving on this splendid and emotive wreck, but the first part has wider relevance. An arrangement of Thistlegorm formed the soundtrack for the Expedition Ocean Vision 3 Video Diary. Written by Courtney, Elysium Strand. This version was recorded at Magrathea Studios, France.

4: Upland (Pandora Element 4) - Inspired by a distant place, remote, haunting and isolated. This piece was used in their Expedition Ocean Vision 5 Video Diary. Written and recorded by Courtney, Elysium Strand, at the original Magrathea Studios in Buckingham, England.

5: Pandora Finale (Pandora Element 5) - The closing section, returning to where we started at the beginning of the album. Written and recorded by Courtney, Elysium Strand, at the original Magrathea Studios in Buckingham, England.

6: Expectations - The title track for Elysium Strand's first album written for a short movie and later adapted into this shorter version. Atmospheric vocals from Carol and Courtney and very rhythmic sequences fused with more traditional backings, illustrating their diverse style. Written and recorded by Courtney, Elysium Strand, at the original Magrathea Studios in Buckingham, England.

7: Time Runs Away - Time Runs Away is Elysium Strand's signature piece. Beautiful vocals by Carol set to a rhythmic guitar backing with lots of gentle, but flowing percussion by Courtney. Time Runs Away is one of their favourites to perform and their most requested piece. Time Runs Away was written by Courtney and recorded by Carol Courtnage and Courtney, Elysium Strand, at the original Magrathea Studios in Buckingham, England.

8: Discovery - More recent work from Elysium Strand since moving to France. Courtney wanted to consolidate the Elysium Strand back catalogue into a single CD to compliment Pandora and to include some fresh material. Written and recorded by Courtney, Elysium Strand, Magrathea Studios South of France.

9: Nemesis - This was one of the Band's earlier works. It was originally quite long as it was written for an underwater documentary, but has been reworked here into a shorter piece. Incidentally, the title should really be nemesis, without a capital N. Written and recorded by Courtney, Elysium Strand, at the original Magrathea Studios in Buckingham, England.

10: Neo - was originally written and recorded in 2007 as part of a soundtrack for an underwater documentary. Courtney updated the piece as a stand-alone work in 2015. Written and recorded by Courtney, Elysium Strand, Magrathea Studios South of France.

11: Mystic - Music written by Carol. Inspired by memories of the Highlands, this was one of the first tracks Elysium Strand wrote for the album Expectations. Written by Carol Courtnage and recorded by Carol and Courtney, Elysium Strand, at the original Magrathea Studios in Buckingham, England.

12: Bourrée - The fifth movement from the Suite in E minor for Lute by Johann Sebastian Bach. A bourrée was a type of two-step dance that originated in France, popular during the reign of Louis XIV. This version arranged & recorded by Courtney for Project Ocean Vision's promo video about Buckingham in 2011. Recorded by Paul Courtnage (Courtney), Elysium Strand.
